Sauber have finally announced their 2025 Formula 1 driver pairing after months of speculation surrounding their choice.
Nico Hulkenberg was the first to pen a deal back in April, and seven months later, the team have revealed that he will be joined by current Formula 2 championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto.
There were a few drivers fighting for a berth at the Swiss outfit, including current duo Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.
It draws a close to their three-year partnership as they head into 2025 with a very fresh look, one year before Audi completes their takeover of the team.
Mattia Binotto ‘impressed’ by Gabriel Bortoleto ‘progress’
Bortoleto has been one of the standout drivers in Formula 2 this year, delivering performance after performance following a turbulent start to the season.
He managed to win from 22nd and last place on the grid during the Italian Grand Prix feature race – firmly announcing himself on the scene.
Speaking to Formu1a.uno, new boss Mattia Binotto shared how he has admired his progression through 2024.
“But more than that as I told him, is his ability to develop, improve and progress over the course of the season itself. And I think he is doing that in his F2 season as well.
“The start was difficult, but then he was really able to not lose, I would say, the direction, what he is trying to achieve, and he showed progress, and that for me is the most important.
“I met him a few weeks ago here in Hinwil for the first time in my office. I was also impressed by his personality, his attitude and his mentality.”
What are the expectations of Bortoleto in his first season?
Bortoleto will be given time to adjust to his new surroundings at Sauber before they turn into Audi in 2026.
He has the potential to be a real long-term asset for them at the age of 19 and should learn a lot from teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
They look set to finish rock bottom of the constructors’ championship in 10th, without a single point this year.

That will give the team a platform to start fresh again and build their car in a direction aimed at the youngster’s driving style.
Keep an eye on Sauber for 2026 though, when under new technical regulations, they could be a threat further up the grid.
