For years, Theo Pourchaire was considered to be one of the next great talents primed for a run to compete in Formula 1.
The Frenchman, who is still a highly touted prospect, sat in Sauber’s driver academy as he developed his skills.
Now a Formula 2 champion, and a man with IndyCar experience too, he has just been overlooked for a race seat with the team whose academy he has been in for five years.
At the age of just 21, his career is far from over, but what do his Formula 1 prospects look like after being denied an opportunity by his own team?
Theo Pourchaire’s next F1 move is ‘difficult’
Taking a look at Pourchaire’s position as a Sauber reserve driver now – it’s unlikely that it’s going to be a role he wants to stick in at a team that clearly doesn’t admire his services enough.
As a Frenchman, he should be eyeing up the potentially vacant seat at Alpine for 2026, which would be a great match for him if he can persuade them to take him on.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Peter Windsor agreed that Pourchaire’s Formula 1 future is now a bit blurry after Sauber’s decision.
“I do feel a little bit sorry for Theo Pourchaire, who is probably the reserve driver for Sauber at the moment. Whatever that means.
“He hasn’t even been considered really. He was a Formula 2 champion not so long ago. Probably difficult to see where Theo’s career is going to go now, Formula 1 wise that is.”
Where should Pourchaire go next?
Unlike Mick Schumacher, who was snubbed by quite a few Formula 1 teams this year, Pourchaire still has options in single-seater racing.
He’s very young, and is still the reigning Formula 2 champion – so he has been in the habit of winning recently.
He could go back to IndyCar and see if he can make a name for himself there, but if he doesn’t perform well it might not be a good thing for his career.

Changing teams could be a good option, with McLaren having released Bortoleto, could there be space there for him to fill in as a reserve?
Alpine lost their reserve in Doohan, so that’s an option, but it’s then about whether they could give him the promise of a seat in the future – would it just be a waste of time?
