Sophia Florsch has some high aspirations for her career as she looks to reach the pinnacle of motorsport in the new few years.
The German driver is currently competing in the 2024 Formula 3 championship with Van Amersfoort Racing and is a part of the Alpine Academy.
Florsch has driven in a wide range of different motorsport categories, including Italian F4, the World Endurance Championship in the LMP2 class and has also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Macau Grand Prix.
The 23-year-old has made it known that her ultimate dream is to reach F1, and speaking with Formel1.de before the 2024 season, she revealed her ‘goal’ in the medium term as she strives towards the top.
Sophia Florsch has hinted at possible Formula 1 tests and a move to Formula 2
Florsch is determined to become the first female to compete in an F1 race since Leila Lombardi, and she took one step closer to her dream when she was signed to the Alpine Academy in 2023.
However, to reach F1, drivers must obtain the FIA super license, with 40 points across a three year period needed to get one. At present, Florsch has no points to her name.
But that is not stopping her in her quest to reach the top of the motorsport ladder and the German outlined her plan to get to Formula 2 in the next few years and possibly complete some tests in F1 machinery.
She said: “So basically it’s like that. I’m going to drive Formula 3 again with Van Amersfoort and the goal is, of course, I say definitely to come out significantly further ahead in the championship than last year.
“It’s definitely about consistently scoring points, podium places, fighting and just showing what we can do from Amersfoort and me too,
“And then the goal is Formula 2 for [the] next few years and that’s what you’re planning. You always spend two years and with Formula 3 and Formula 2 you should get it together.
“Apart from that, there are also many other ways to collect these points from Formula 1 tests etc. I think the topic is really more of a question [of if another] Formula 1 manufacturer or Alpine is ready to take this step or not.”
Florsch has endured a tough season in Formula 3
Unfortunately for Florsch, she has not been able to hit the targets she set for herself in F3 before the season started.
In 2023, in her first season back in the category since 2020, the German finished in 23rd in the standings with just six points.
With one round of the 2024 campaign to go, Florsch has not been able to improve on last season as she is yet to register a point in the championship and lies 28th overall.
The 23-year-old has suffered five retirements this year and finished inside the top 15 on only three occasions.
