Nyck de Vries has been successful in a range of cars throughout his career, racing in the World Endurance Championship and winning the Formula E title.
The Dutchman has also raced in Formula 1, enduring a short stint with AlphaTauri during the first half of 2023 as he floundered at the back of the field.
De Vries was incredibly competitive throughout his junior career, winning the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title in 2014.
He went on to race in Formula 2, the final step on the ladder before F1, and won the championship in 2019 while driving for ART.
Nyck de Vries made his debut in the WEC Hypercar class in 2024
De Vries debuted in the World Endurance Championship in the 2018/19 season in the LMP2 class, driving for Racing Team Nederland.
The Dutchman continued racing in WEC over the next few years, competing in the LMP2 class, as well as balancing the 2019-20 Formula E season with Mercedes alongside his commitments in WEC.
De Vries was relatively unsuccessful in his first season in the all-electric series, finishing 11th in the standings. By contrast, WEC was a more memorable campaign after taking victory in LMP2 alongside Frits Van Eerd in an all-Dutch line-up at Fuji Speedway.
In addition to his racing commitments, the Dutchman got his foot in the door at Toyota in the LMP1 class, taking on the role of reserve driver ahead of the 2019-20 season.
More endurance racing followed in 2020 by competing in the European Le Mans Series, whilst his title-winning Formula E 2020-21 campaign also began for Mercedes.
After multiple seasons of racing in junior series and LMP2 prototypes in endurance racing, De Vries got his break with Toyota in 2024 to race in the Hypercar class – the top category of racing in WEC.
The Dutchman joined a formidable lineup in the No. 7 car alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway ahead of the 2024 season.
WEC was combined with the closing stages of his 2023-24 season with Mahindra in Formula E, meaning the opening months of 2024 were very busy.
The season began competitively with fifth place in the Qatar 1812km at the Losail International Circuit, ahead of the No. 8 Toyota who slumped to eighth place.
After a strong start in Qatar, De Vries and his teammates won the second round of the season at Imola in a chaotic race in mixed conditions.
A minor blip at Spa-Francorchamps followed as the trio finished in seventh place but the Toyota drivers returned to form at Le Mans.
The trio of drivers saw a slight switch at Le Mans with Argentinian Jose Maria Lopez replacing Mike Conway, who suffered an injury before the event.
They finished in second place and were the winning No. 50 Ferrari’s closest challengers, finishing just 14.2 seconds behind after 24 hours.
Nyck de Vries won the Formula E Championship in 2021
De Vries won the Formula 2 title at the end of 2019 after a hard-fought year, but the doors to F1 were firmly shut ahead of the following season.
The Dutchman had to look elsewhere to race going forward, eventually switching to Formula E for the 2019-20 season with Mercedes for his debut year in the series.
After a relatively unsuccessful year and just one podium, taking second place in the final race at the Berlin ePrix represented a brief highlight in a lacklustre season.
But the following year was a sizeable step forward as he battled for the championship. De Vries’ title-winning campaign kicked off with a victory in the first race of the weekend in Saudi Arabia.
Mercedes’ De Vries was relatively inconsistent over the year after following his superb win at the season opener with a double retirement in Rome.
A similar pattern continued over the next couple of rounds, winning at Valencia in Spain before retiring in Monaco.
De Vries stood on the podium just four times throughout his championship-winning year, a strange season in which neither he nor his nearest rival, Edoardo Mortara, could find a high level of consistency.
The Puebla ePrix in Mexico was another doubleheader with lacklustre results, taking ninth place before retiring from the weekend’s second race.
As the season drew to a close, races in New York, London, and Berlin remained to end the calendar. De Vries went away from the United States of America with no points before a much improved weekend in London, finishing in second place twice.
After a mixed few rounds, the Dutchman headed into the final round in Germany down in fourth place in the standings.
Sam Bird held the advantage ahead of Antonio Felix da Costa as De Vries sat in fourth place, four points behind the championship leader.
Lucas di Grassi won the first event of the doubleheader, as De Vries failed to score points. In the second race, the eventual champion finished in eighth place, which was enough to clinch the title by seven points ahead of Mortara.
Nyck de Vries raced in Formula 1 in 2023 for AlphaTauri
De Vries had waited a long time to get his chance to race in Formula 1 and it eventually arrived at the age of 28 with AlphaTauri alongside Yuki Tsunoda in 2023.
The Dutchman had impressed during a one-off outing for Williams the year before, taking ninth place in the Italian Grand Prix and finishing ahead of his teammate Nicholas Latifi.
Williams loaned De Vries for the race at Monza after Alex Albon required emergency surgery for appendicitis.
De Vries then replaced the outgoing Pierre Gasly at AlphaTauri for 2023 but endured a forgettable 10-race stint at the back of the field, marred by errors.
AlphaTauri’s new recruit was beaten by Tsunoda in the opening three rounds before a clumsy retirement in Azerbaijan after clattering into the wall. Daniel Ricciardo eventually replaced him ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
