Lamborghini’s future in the World Endurance Championship is in serious doubt, and the Italian outfit could be set to make a brutal decision over their sports car programme.
The latest revelation in the team’s ongoing woes comes after Romain Grosjean has cast doubt over his future with Lamborghini.
The Frenchman, who raced in Formula 1 in 2009 and from 2012 to 2020, competed in the IMSA SportsCar Championship with the Italian outfit’s Iron Lynx team in 2024. Grosjean made three appearances in the No. 63 SC63 machine, achieving a best result of seventh at Sebring.
Grosjean also drove with the team in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, racing the No. 19 Hypercar alongside his IMSA teammates Matteo Cairoli and Andrea Caldarelli, with the trio finishing third.
The 38-year-old is currently trying to confirm his schedule for 2025, as he waiting to see whether he will have a seat in IndyCar next year having competed with Juncos Hollinger Racing this season.
And the Frenchman seems keen to remain with Lamborghini in IMSA next season, but the team’s issues off the track are effectively them greatly in the WEC.
Lamborghini are ‘not expected; to continue in the WEC with their ongoing problems
For the 2025 season, WEC entries must run at least two cars in the Hypercar class. Lamborghini ran just one in 2024 with Mirko Bortolotti, Daniil Kvyat and Edoardo Mortara piloting their No. 63 SC63.
This creates ‘unforeseen’ problems for Lamborghini, who despite being part of the Volkswagen group, are struggling to adequately support their endurance programmes in Europe and North America.

Lamborghini have stressed that ‘all option are possible’ as they re-evaluate their situation. These options include either running in one championship – WEC or IMSA – or scrapping the programme entirely.
Now, according to Marshall Pruett, Lamborghini are ‘not expected’ to continue in WEC as Grosjean anticipates that he will be staying with the team in IMSA next year.
Discussing the Frenchman on The Marshall Pruett Podcast, he said: “He [Grosjean] assumes everything is going forward with Lamborghini for next year in IMSA in the GTP class.
“Knowing that Lamborghini is not expected to continue in the World Endurance Championship in Hypercar with that same model. What that might do for Romain in terms of Le Mans or any other races outside of IMSA, not totally sure.”
Lamborghini scored points only once all season in their debut year in the Hypercar class
Lamborghini have only just made their debut in the Hypercar class this season, and their woes off the track were clear to see on it with their lack of performance compared to their rivals.
Not helped by the fact that they could not gather as much data through only having one car, Bortolotti, Kvyat and Mortara only score points once all season, as they came home 10th in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The No. 63 retired three times in the season, with a water pressure issue forcing them out of the season finale in Bahrain, thus ending their season on a whimper.
Lamborghini finished bottom out of the manufacturers’ who completed the full WEC season. Isotta Fraschini did not score points in the opening four races before withdrawing from the championshop ahead of the race in Austin.
