Ferrari have struggled to ascend to the heights reached in their classic 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans victory, and from 2025 they will go back to having just two cars.
It means that while they failed to replicate their second place in the constructors’ standings this year, despite having an extra car, they will need to focus more on maximising their potential.
They are the winners of the last two races at Le Mans, one of the signature events on the motorsport calendar – showing just how strong they can be.
In fact, Ferrari’s 2023 victory on the 100th anniversary of the event was something truly remarkable for a team in its first season back in endurance racing for 50 years.
Opting to return to endurance racing in WEC was a huge step for Ferrari – for all, everyone knows about their historic rivalry with Ford in the 1960s, which was even depicted in a Hollywood movie.
Their first season back saw them achieve podiums with at least one of their cars at all races apart from Fuji, while that number increased to four in 2024, despite having an extra car.
Renowned motorsport journalist Sam Smith recalled their terrific performance in their inaugural return to Le Mans on its 100th anniversary in a video for WEC’s YouTube channel.
“The way that Ferrari came back to Le Mans and won in 2023, was one of the best wins, I think, at La Sarthe for a very long time. It was full of romance.
“Ferrari returning and winning in the hundredth anniversary of Le Mans. But actually below that, there’s a lot of hard work that’s gone into that.”
Will Ferrari win three in a row at Le Mans in 2025?
Claiming a third triumph in a row at Le Mans would be a remarkable feat for Ferrari, but they were pretty clearly the third fastest of the four Hypercar outfits last year.
Their 2024 Le Mans-winning trio of Antonia Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen and Miguel Molina did at least manage to scrape second in the drivers’ standings by two points.
But they aren’t carrying as much momentum into the following year as they had last time and appeared to take a bit of a step back this season.
There’s work for them to do in the off-season if they want to beat their rivals, with new teams being added to the fold soon as well.
Aston Martin arrives with the Valkyrie, Alpine should continue to improve and Toyota have continuity with its experienced line-up – in other words, winning another Le Mans is a big ask.
