Elfyn Evans has been battling at the front of the field throughout his WRC career, winning races and contending for championships, so here’s everything you need to know about the British driver.
Evans made his debut in the WRC on home soil in 2007 at Wales Rally GB, before undertaking his first full campaign seven years later in 2014.
He began driving for Ford and joined the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team in 2013, finishing sixth at Rally Italia Sardegna.
But the Welsh driver left Ford and joined Toyota for the 2020 season, which was affected by COVID-19. He competed alongside his co-driver, Scott Martin, throughout the year.
Elfyn Evans won his first WRC rally in 2017
The early phases of Evans’ WRC career had plenty of top-10 finishes with drives to fourth place at Rally Mexico and in Germany during 2014, his first full season in the championship.
Evans finished inside the top 10 at all but four of the WRC events that season for M-Sport WRT, as well, with his only retirement coming at Rally Sweden.
The 2015 season saw Evans stay with M-Sport and Ford for another campaign plus another year of steady improvement and consistent points finishes.
After a second consecutive fourth-place finish at Rally Mexico, a first podium arrived next time out at Rally Argentina, finishing third behind his compatriot Kris Meeke and Norwegian driver Mads Ostberg.
Evans sat fourth in the standings after the visit to Argentina, having taken points from all four of the opening rounds.
The M-Sport driver and his co-driver, Daniel Barritt, were the quickest of the Ford Fiesta RS cars over the event, as the top two positions were locked out by Citroen DS3s.
Throughout the remainder of 2015, Evans continued to score points consistently, as well as taking second place in the penultimate round of the season in France.
M-Sport dropped Evans to WRC2 for 2016 before he returned to the WRC for a full season a year later. While taking a step back from WRC, he won the British Rally Championship driving a Ford Fiesta R5.
A return to WRC in 2017 saw the Ford driver continue his good form, remaining in and around the top 10 throughout the early stages of the season.
He scored points in all but two of the rallies that year, scoring second-place finishes on the gravel of Argentina and Rally Finland.
Despite a flurry of podiums and superb driving over his WRC career, Evans hadn’t yet delivered a victory. The Ford driver picked up the pace at Wales Rally GB, taking nine stage wins on his way to the overall triumph at his home event.
Evans held the rally lead from the second special stage, wrestling it from Sebastien Ogier and staying in front throughout the weekend until the rally’s conclusion.
Elfyn Evans finished second at the Monte Carlo Rally in 2021
The Monte Carlo Rally is a notoriously difficult event to win. The traditional curtain-raiser for the WRC Championship kicks off on the icy roads above Monaco.
Evans has had mixed results in the principality over his career, from scoring points on five consecutive occasions from 2014-2018 to retiring in 2019.
Throughout his run of points finishes, he drove to sixth place three times during his career as a Ford driver.
A switch to Toyota for 2020 began to yield better results in Monte Carlo, beginning with a third place behind Ogier and Thierry Neuville.
Evans took four special stage wins over the event, with three in a row on day two plus a fourth triumph on Special Stage 10.
The 2021 season saw a step up from the British driver as he returned to Monte Carlo, scoring another podium finish with second place.
He remained consistent and was the rally winner, Ogier’s nearest challenger, despite taking just two wins on special stages.
Evans finished second at the rally as he began his second campaign with Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT alongside his co-driver Martin in 2021, who followed his compatriot to the Japanese manufacturer from Ford.
Ogier and Evans were just over half a minute apart at the end of the event in a one-two finish for Toyota to kick off the year.
The remainder of the British driver’s season saw a run to third in the standings, ending the campaign just 23 points behind Ogier.
The Toyota driver took two overall victories in Portugal and at Rally Finland as the Toyota was competitive throughout the year.
He finished in the top 10 in every round, taking consistent top-five finishes in the World Rally Championship.
Evans ended the season superbly, winning in Finland before two consecutive second-place finishes in Spain and at Rally Monza in Italy. The event was a unique spectacle to close the season, using part of the Monza Circuit, which is also used by Formula 1 for the Italian Grand Prix.
