Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Makinen both won four championships each during the 1980s and 1990s. Rovanpera joined the exclusive club of Finns to win a WRC title in 2021.
He competed in his first full WRC campaign in 2020 for Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT and showed raw speed and impressive consistency.
The shortened season due to COVID-19 saw just one tarmac rally, with the season opener on the icy roads of the mixed-surface Monte Carlo Rally and the other five events on gravel and snow.
Events didn’t quite fall into place for Rovanpera to take an overall victory during the 2020 season but he did finish in the top five at every rally he finished.
The highlight of the Toyota driver’s season arrived at the second event of the year at Rally Sweden, finishing in third place while winning on the final stage of the rally.
A trio of fifth-place finishes followed towards the end of the season, alongside a fourth at Rally Turkey for Rovanpera.
The 2021 season was a mixed year for the Finn, taking two wins but was held back by a lacklustre run of events from Croatia to Rally Italia Sardegna, failing to break into the top 10 after a promising start to the year.
He bounced back with a sixth-place finish at Safari Rally in Kenya, gaining critical points after a disappointing run of consecutive events.
The gravel of Rally Estonia provided the perfect platform for Rovanpera to deliver his first victory in the WRC just under a minute ahead of Craig Breen.
The Toyota driver took eight stage wins in Estonia and moved up to fourth place in the standings ahead of Ott Tanak.
Kalle Rovanpera won his first WRC title in 2022
After a superb 2021 season, he laid the foundations for a championship challenge in the following season. After the inconsistencies and moments of brilliance during his second full WRC campaign, he stormed to the front in 2022.
Rovanpera stayed with Toyota for a third year and was competitive throughout the season opener at the Monte Carlo Rally, finishing in fourth place, just over two minutes behind the overall winner Sebastien Loeb.
The Finn won the next three rallies after a strong start to the year kicking off with the snow of Rally Sweden, taking six special stages on his way to victory.
His blistering run of form for Toyota continued as the championship moved on from Sweden, taking four more wins from the next five events.
Rovanpera was the class of the field at Rally Croatia and in Portugal, as Tanak and Elfyn Evans finished second in those two events.
After four rounds, he had taken three victories in an impressive start to the year. The Finn suffered a slight dip in form at Rally Italia Sardegna, slumping to fifth place.
The Toyota driver was powerless to stop Tanak from driving to victory at the end of the fifth European round in a row.
Rovanpera returned to form next time out at Rally Safari, winning in Kenya, improving on his sixth place from the year before.
Another victory came on the gravel of Estonia, as he gained more points on his nearest title rival, Tanak, who took third place.
The Finnish driver’s final five rounds were incredibly mixed. He took second place at his home rally behind Tanak before finishing outside the top 10 in Belgium and Greece.
With just three rounds to go, the title was in Rovanpera’s grasp. The Finn had performed admirably all season and won at Rally New Zealand, becoming the youngest-ever WRC champion at 22 years and one day old.
Rovanpera’s campaign ended with a third-place finish at Rally Catalunya before a sub-par end to the year in Japan, ending up in 12th place.
