Ugo Ugochukwu has been very impressive in his junior single-seater career and shone at the 2024 FIA Formula Regional World Cup in Macau, so here’s all you need to know.
The American driver has driven admirably throughout his fledgling career and will move up to FIA F3 in the 2025 season with the Italian team PREMA. But before debuting on the Formula 1 support bill, Ugochuwu made headlines at the 2024 Macau Grand Prix.
Driving for R-ace GP in the Formula Regional World Cup, Ugochuwku set the timing screens alight with a 2:19.107 to secure pole position for the Qualifying Race – which he went on to win in rainy conditions around the narrow streets of Macau.
Ugochukwu took full advantage of winning the Qualifying Race at Macau and went on to win the Grand Prix, which was a chaotic event.
After the Safety Car start, he led the field and immediately built a gap over his nearest rival, Oliver Goethe, in the opening stages. He perfected the restart to create an advantage onto the pit straight, which kept him ahead of the Red Bull junior.
Multiple stoppages occurred in the race, including a red flag after an incident at Lisboa, but Ugochukwu kept calm and made very few mistakes.
The 2024 edition was not Ugochukwu’s first experience of the Macau Grand Prix after entering the F3 World Cup in 2023 and tasting Formula 3 cars. But he had a difficult weekend and Ugochukwu collided with Dan Ticktum at Lisboa.
His impressive showing in the 2024 FR World Cup in Macau followed the trend of Ugochukwu’s junior career, having consistently been at the front in all of the single-seater championships he has raced in since graduating from karting.
Ugo Ugochukwu became a McLaren junior driver aged 13
Ugochukwu has also been closely linked to McLaren as part of their junior driver programme over the past few seasons.
The British team has backed Ugochukwu since March 2021. He joined their programme at the age of 13, just as his karting career finished.
During his time in go-karts, Ugochukwu won his first championship in 2015 – taking the Florida Winter Tour – Rotax Micro Max title.
This set up three more championships as he honed his craft in go-karts and, two years later, he won the IAME International Open – X30 Mini series.
The good form continued into 2018 and another championship was won, claiming the Challenge of the Americas – Junior ROK crown.
Ugochukwu raced for top teams such as Ricky Flynn Motorsport, who also helped develop Formula 1 driver Lando Norris in karting.
His final karting title came in 2020 when Ugochukwu won the European Karting Championship before being picked up by McLaren a year later.
Ugo Ugochukwu won his first single-seater title in Euro 4
After enjoying a superb karting career, the American moved into single-seaters for 2022, making the first steps on the ladder to Formula 1.
Ugochukwu competed in a full season on British F4 with Carlin, learning British circuits in a very competitive field.
He started superbly at Donington Park, taking pole position in qualifying for his first-ever race in cars, ahead of eventual champion Alex Dunne.
The Carlin driver performed well over the year, taking two wins, including a superb drive at Brands Hatch Indy in the rain in front of Zak Brown.
A second win followed in Scotland at Knockhill, but he couldn’t challenge Dunne and then Williams junior Ollie Gray for the title.
Alongside racing in the UK, he competed in a few rounds of Italian F4. The McLaren junior took podiums in four of his six races.
Ugochukwu gathered experience in ADAC F4 as well, learning new tracks as Andrea Kimi Antonelli dominated the championship.
After a successful first year, Ugochukwu raced in Italian F4 in 2023 alongside a full season of Euro 4 to maximise track time.
He raced for PREMA, taking three wins over the season and impressively picking up Italian during his time in the country.
Ugochukwu’s first championship success in single-seaters arrived in Euro 4 after a superb campaign in 2023. The McLaren junior dazzled with three race wins amongst an impressive field, including Arvid Lindblad and James Wharton that year.
He also competed away from Europe in the F4 UAE Championship, winning races as he adjusted to new circuits and different conditions.
The 2024 season saw Ugochukwu move up to FRECA and leave Formula 4 behind. FRECA is run at a high level and has a very difficult car to drive.
It was a mixed season and Ugochukwu failed to score at Spa. His form improved towards the end of the year. On his return to Italy, Ugochukwu won at Monza.
FRECA proved to be tricky, but he had better success during a partial campaign in the GB3 Championship. It is a similar level to FRECA and he took third place in the season-opener at Oulton Park.
The McLaren junior’s return to the track in Cheshire was the first time on the International Circuit after driving on the short layout in British F4.
Ugochukwu also tested a Formula E car in May 2024 for McLaren at the Berlin ePrix’s official rookie test alongside Gregoire Saucy. Formula E has become increasingly popular with young drivers such as Zane Maloney leaving the F1 paddock behind.
At the end of 2024, Ugochukwu also returned to the Macau Grand for the second time as Formula Regional replaced FIA F3 as the event’s single-seater category.
Ugochukwu was blisteringly fast, taking pole position. He also won the Qualifying Race, which was affected by rain and ended under the Safety Car.
