There are multiple drivers who have dipped their toes in both IndyCar and Formula 1, but few have done so on a full-time basis.
14 drivers since the year 2000 have managed to feature full-time in both series, many of whom have all won races in IndyCar.
Just two of them have reached the top step of the podium in Formula 1, which just goes to show how difficult it is to be on top of the pile at the pinnacle of motorsport.
Only three drivers on the list have won a championship in either, proving how much talent it takes to compete at the highest level.
Which Formula 1 drivers have also featured full-time in IndyCar?
Starting with the most successful of them all across both sports, it’s Jacques Villeneuve – a man who now spends much of his time being a pundit.
He drove in Formula 1 and IndyCar this side of the millennium but did manage to win both of his titles before 2000.
The next race winner across both series is fan-favourite Juan Pablo Montoya, who moved to Formula 1 after he ran in Champ Car (the unusual way round to do it).

The late Justin Wilson, who sadly lost his life after being struck by debris in an IndyCar race, competed for Minardi in Formula 1 back in 2003.
Alex Zanardi is too much of a legend not to mention, having faced so many setbacks, he continues to fight as he did on the track, racing full-time in Formula 1 in the 1990s, but also in Champ Car in 2001.
Takuma Sato is a legendary name across both categories, and he’s also an Indy 500 winner which helps his legacy too.
The modern and forgotten names…
There are a few names that might raise some eyebrows, having been in an equal amount of shock myself when I went through this list.
Robert Doornbos – who competed for Red Bull in the mid-2000s also raced in IndyCar, while another driver backed by the energy drinks giant – Enrique Bernoldi also did too.
Cristiano da Matta is the last of the names that may have been forgotten, but that’s fair enough considering how short-lived his Formula 1 career was.

In more recent times, the likes of Max Chilton, Sebastien Bourdais (a four-time title winner), Alexander Rossi, Romain Grosjean, and Marcus Ericcson have all competed full-time in both.
An interesting list of drivers, that’s for sure, and it’s one that could be added to soon if Valtteri Bottas cannot secure his future in Formula 1…
