Theo Pourchaire’s debut campaign in IndyCar has not gone the way that he would have hoped.
The Frenchman won last year’s Formula 2 championship at the final round in Abu Dhabi over rival Fredrik Vesti, and has been Sauber’s reserve driver in Formula 1 since 2022.
After Sauber opted to retain Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu for 2024, Pourchaire moved over to IndyCar as he stepped in to replace the injured David Malukas at Long Beach. The 21-year-old finished an impressive 11th on debut.
After Malukas was released by McLaren due to an undetermined recovery time, Pourchaire was given the chance to race until the end of the season. The Frenchman finished 22nd at Barber and 17th and the Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
After Callum Illot drove in the Indy 500, Pourchaire grabbed his first top 10 finish at Detroit with 10th, before finishing 13th at Road America. However, after this race, the 21-year-old was dropped by McLaren after the signing of Nolan Siegel.

Pourchaire would get another outing with McLaren at Toronto after Alexander Rossi suffered an injury in practice. The Frenchman would go on to finish in 14th.

Since the race in Toronto, the 21-year-old has not featured in IndyCar, or any other category for that matter. Pourchaire posted on social media that he was bored as he struggles to find a race seat.
Speaking with Motorsport France, Pourchaire reiterated how much he enjoyed his time in IndyCar, but he ultimately expressed his disappointment with being dropped by McLaren.
“As I said before, this championship is really great,” he said. “The whole IndyCar community has been very nice to me; the drivers, the organizers, the members of all the teams.
“Being a driver coming from Europe, F2 Champion, I think it’s something that is seen positively in IndyCar, and I also really liked the car, the circuits, the fights. Everything was really good.
“I had a great opportunity with Arrow McLaren, but unfortunately… I was expecting to race a little bit longer but as I said, I’m of course disappointed not to finish the season there with them but I thank them again for this opportunity.
“It was really crucial at that time to have this kind of opportunity, otherwise I’m not sure I would have been able to continue driving.”

Can Theo Pourchaire find a seat in IndyCar for 2025?
As the 2025 season nears, several IndyCar teams are beginning to fill their driver line-ups, thus creating fewer opportunities for Pourchaire.
Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing already have an array of solid, well-established drivers, while Arrow McLaren have brought in Christian Lundgaard to partner Siegel and Pato O’Ward.
As the doors begin to close at the front of the field, Pourchaire will have to resort to joining a midfield squad or a backmarker if he is to compete in IndyCar in 2025.
But it is not just this series that the Frenchman is looking at for next year, as Pourchaire is also considering the World Endurance Championship and Formula E as he desperately searching for a full-time race seat.
