Louis Foster will become an IndyCar driver for the 2025 season with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing after a successful junior career.
The British driver will race alongside Graham Rahal next season, and the team are still looking for a third driver to complete their line-up.
Bobby Rahal is pleased to see Foster join the team but disappointed to see Christian Lundgaard leave and join Arrow Mclaren.
Foster won the Indy NXT championship after a superb campaign, standing on the podium at every event apart from the opening two at St. Petersburg and Barber Motorsports Park.
He originally began racing in Europe, ascending the ladder towards Formula 1 before switching to America and chasing IndyCar.
Foster didn’t have a clear goal earlier in his career but explained the defining moment that made him push towards American motorsport when speaking to silverstone.co.uk.
Louis Foster knew he wanted to race in America after his British F3 season
Foster began his career in the Ginetta Junior Championship and was consistently racing at the front of the field before moving to single-seaters.
After racing in British F4, he moved up to BRDC F3 for the 2020 season. Foster was blisteringly fast once more.
He finished third in the championship, taking three wins but it was also the moment that he realised racing in Formula 1 would be difficult to achieve.
The junior categories towards F1 are very expensive and some talented drivers can’t make it to the highest level due to funding issues.
Foster explained: “That [British F3 season] was when I decided that I was going to go to America. I just knew the European ladder wasn’t going to work out for me so I knew I had to go to America, and I’m glad I did.”
How will Louis Foster perform next season in IndyCar?
Foster is joining a very experienced team in Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and will have a good benchmark in Graham Rahal.
The team have had some difficult times in recent years, such as Rahal getting bumped out of the field in 2023 at the Indy 500.
Foster will be making his IndyCar debut having raced at some circuits on the calendar in Indy NXT, such as the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Ovals in IndyCar are very difficult, and Foster has driven on the same ovals, such as the Milwaukee Mile, in his junior career. This should allow him to acclimatise at a quicker rate as he has experienced on those tracks.
