David Alonso has emerged as one of the rising stars in motorcycle racing after having an incredible title-winning Moto3 season in 2024.
The Colombian has utterly dominated Moto3 this year, winning 13 of the 19 races so far and was crowned champion with four rounds to spare.
Alonso has finished in the top five in all but two races this season, with a lowest finish of 11th at Jerez – his only finish outside the top 10.
Winning the last six races in a row, the 18-year-old comes into the season finale at Catalunya with 396 points – which is a staggering 160 points ahead of second-place Daniel Holgado.
David Alonso would ‘really shock’ everyone if he was off the pace in Moto2
After what has only been his second full season in Moto3, Alonso will make the step up to Moto2 in 2025, remaining with the CFMoto Aspar Team, who run with a Kalex bike.
After such an impressive season in 2024 in Moto3, many will be looking at the young Colombian to see how he can adapt to the next step up.
It is clear what talent and speed he has, but it can often take time for a rider to get used to Moto2 after moving up a level.
This is what former Superbike World Champion Neil Hodgson drew attention to while speaking on commentary on TNT Sports 2 during practice at Catalunya. The Brit says he would be ‘really shocked’ if Alonso was not on the pace straight away in Moto2 next season.
“I think it would be fair to say we’d all be shocked if he’s off the pace, if he’s outside the top 10 and really struggling,” he said.
“I’d be really shocked. But it’s happened before… David Alonso’s made a difference [in Moto3], he’s a special talent.”
How has David Alonso’s future Moto2 team CFMoto Aspar Team faired in 2024?
Alonso will be joined at CFMoto Aspar Team by his Moto3 rival Holgado in 2025. The Spaniard is level on points with Collin Veijer heading into the season finale in second, having grabbed one win and seven podiums across the year so far.
The duo will be riding Kalex bikes next year, who have the most machines in the Moto2 championship with 36 full-time and part-time riders competing across the season.

CFMoto Aspar Team’s current pairing of Jake Dixon and Izan Guevara have had mixed success in 2024. The former has grabbed two wins and five points, whereas the latter has struggled to find consistent results, securing his first podium of the year last time out in Malaysia.
With Alonso and Holgado moving to the team in 2025, Dixon will be joining the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team as he moves from Kalex to Buscoscuro, while Guevara’s future is currently unknown.
