Theo Pourchaire is a driver desperate to find a full-time racing seat after a disappointing 2024 season.
The young Frenchman won the 2023 Formula 2 championship at the expense of Fredrik Vesti after a tense final round in Abu Dhabi.
Pourchaire has served as Sauber’s test and reserve driver since 2022 and has not featured in a Grand Prix for the team. The 21-year-old missed out on a full-time drive last season, which Pourchaire says hurt him a lot.
For 2024, the Frenchman moved over to IndyCar, driving for Arrow McLaren in place of the injured David Malukas. In his debut at Long Beach, Pourchaire finished an impressive 11th.
After the 21-year-old stood in at Barber Motorsports Park and the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Malukas was released from his McLaren contract, with Pourchaire set to race for the remainder of the year. However, after just two more races, including a top 10 finish at Detroit, the Frenchman was dropped by the team in favour of Nolan Siegel.

Pourchaire got one more outing with McLaren at Toronto after Alexander Rossi injured his wrist in practice, finishing 14th. Despite showing promising signs, a full-time seat has been hard to find, with Pourchaire writing that he is bored on social media as he struggles to keep racing.

The 21-year-old is said to be in contention for the Sauber F1 seat next year, along with F2 title contender Gabriel Bortoleto.
However, Pourchaire is not putting all his eggs in one basket, as he has hinted at the possibility of racing in the World Endurance Championship and Formula E.
Speaking with Motorsport France, Pourchaire expressed his desire to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and having tested in Formula E back in 2022, he sees both championships as a ‘real target.’
“Why not?” he said. “Right now I’m in a situation where I’m trying to find something to do, and the WEC looks really good. I watch almost every race.
“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a race I would like to do one day. It’s a dream to win it, for sure, like for any driver, and like the Indianapolis 500 or the Monaco Grand Prix.
“I am looking for options, and in Formula E too. It is a competitive championship, a very different style of motorsport, because it is electric, with a very different way of driving.
“I have already tested a Formula E, in 2022, when I did development for the next generation. It is a very difficult category so if I go there, there will be a lot of work. We will see but these championships are a target, for sure.”

From this, it is clear to see that Pourchaire is desperate to find a seat anywhere, in any category, just to keep his dream alive.
After his snub from Sauber in F1 and his axing from McLaren in IndyCar, the Frenchman is looking to broaden his horizons and compete in a new series.
For the WEC, there could be a possible seat, as Aston Martin are looking for drivers outside their current setup for their 2025 WEC entry.
Things look less promising in Formula E, as seats at the top of the grid are all but filled. If Pourchaire is that desperate to find a seat, a move to the back of the all-electric series is an uninspiring option, but a seat nonetheless.
