Oliver Solberg is getting towards the end of a very competitive championship in WRC2, leading the standings with one round to go.
The Swedish driver has taken three wins this season, including two consecutive successes in Latvia and Finland.
Solberg is competing against a very competitive field of drivers including Yohan Rossel and Finnish driver Sami Pajari, who has begun to compete in the Rally1 class.
The WRC2 championship leader has already raced in the top tier of the World Rally Championship for Hyundai in his career. And Solberg has told Motorsport.com that he may have opportunities to return to Rally1 next year.
Oliver Solberg feels the option of driving for M-Sport is ‘attractive’
Solberg competed for Hyundai in the Rally1 class in 2022, gathering valuable experience at the highest level of rallying.
The Swedish driver endured a difficult time, retiring from the Monte Carlo Rally and in Croatia early in the season, before recovering to finish fourth in Belgium.
Despite his improvement over the year at Hyundai, Solberg was dropped ahead of the 2023 campaign and returned to WRC2.
But there could be opportunities for the 23-year-old to return to the top tier of the World Rally Championship next season as there are seats available.
M-Sport could have some vacancies as Adrien Fourmaux could be moving from Ford machinery to Hyundai ahead of the 2025 season.
Solberg explained that racing for M-Sport would be a good option, although he is wary after the frustrating end to his time at Hyundai.

He said: “I don’t think it [2025] looks very different to what I have now, and obviously the dream is to be in Rally1 but I think that will be difficult, but you never know.
“If I think about my short-term future, maybe it would be very attractive. But long-term my dream is to stay in the WRC for a long time and I don’t want to do the same mistake I did last time with Hyundai.
“Obviously, [with] what happened there, you are very careful about what decision you make. I think M-Sport could be great and they have had a great season, it is difficult.”
Winning the WRC2 title could make getting a Rally1 drive easier for Oliver Solberg
Solberg is on the verge of clinching the WRC2 championship, as he leads the standings with one round to go at Rally Japan.

The Swedish driver leads by 12 points over his nearest rival Rossel with Pajari also in contention to take the championship.
If Solberg were to take the title for Toksport WRT it may make finding a drive in the World Rally Championship easier as his stock would rise.
