Formula 3 is the next step for many aspiring Formula 1 drivers who are in the early stages of their single-seater careers.
Some dominate until they reach the series, only to be faced with the reality of an ultra-competitive field and difficult Pirelli tyres.
Some even skip it altogether – take new Mercedes Formula 1 driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli for example, who went straight from FRECA to Formula 2.
Louis Sharp recently won the GB3 championship and will embark on his maiden Formula 3 season at the age of just 17 after penning a deal with Rodin Motorsport this week.
Louis Sharp academy signing ‘can’t be far away’
In fact, the Kiwi will receive an opportunity to test some Formula 3 machinery at a post-season test in Jerez this week.
The extra laps could help him gain a lot of crucial knowledge ahead of the 2025 season, which kicks off next March.
Speaking on the Formula For Success podcast, David Coulthard believes that a Formula 1 academy will pick him up soon.

“Well look, if Louis, I think the question is sort of saying why isn’t anyone snapping up young Louis, well I’ve got to say and expect that of the talent hunters are out there looking at all of the championships.
“So, I’m sure if he’s leading the championship and getting results, it’s only going to be a matter of time, I know he’s only 16, but he can’t be far away from him getting snapped up.”
Which academy would be the best to sign for?
There are plenty of factors that go into a decision of which Formula 1 team academy to sign for, from opportunities to team decisions.
The Ferrari academy for example, usually sends their drivers to represent PREMA in the junior categories, who are considered to be one of the better teams.
It goes without saying that Red Bull would be a good option, with a rich history of nurturing talent through to Formula 1.

But, in recent times, Williams, Alpine, and McLaren have all proven that they are willing to call upon their junior drivers too.
It’s important not to put too much pressure on Sharp at a young age anyway, and let his performances on track during his maiden Formula 3 season do the talking.
