Formula 1 is set for its biggest technological change in decades come the 2026 season.
The new regulations will see the sport move towards being more sustainable, with the powertrains being a 50/50 split for internal combustion and electrical power.
Furthermore, F1 will use 100% sustainable fuels, with these new engine regulations being the main talking point for the 2026 season as drivers and team principals have raised concerns about the weight and overall speed of the car.
Many have also pointed out that the modifications are a step towards those seen in Formula E, and the all-electric category’s CEO Jeff Dodds spoke with RacingNews365 to give his verdict on F1’s dramatic changes.

Looking at the rules on the first reflection, it is perhaps easy to say that F1 poses a potential threat to FE, or In fact even copies them.
Thankfully, in FE’s case, they have the legal right to be the FIA’s only all-electric sport, which means F1 can never make it so their engines are fully run on electrical power.
As aforementioned, weight has already been raised as a concern for the 2026 cars with the 50/50 power split, and Dodds wonders therefore whether F1 can go beyond 50% electrical power.
“I look at it from multiple different angles,” he said.
“So first of all, we’re the only world championship motorsport under the FIA that can race full electric, that’s us, that’s what we’re famous for.
“In ’26, F1 go 50/50, I’m not sure how far beyond 50/50 they could go because of the power to weight challenges of having two different energy sources in the car.
“And I don’t think they’re interested in getting heavier and going slower, so I’m not sure how far beyond it that goes.”

Formula E are set for a revolutionary change for the 2024/25 season
With F1’s regulations set for a dramatic overhaul in the sport’s history come 2026, FE is also bringing a revolutionary change to electric racing technology.
For Season 11 – which kicks off in December – FE will debut its new machine; the GEN3 Evo car. The car marks the fastest car seen in the sport’s history, capable of driving at more than 200mph.
In fact, the car is able to go from 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds, making it 36% fastest than its predecessor and even 30% fastest than a current F1 car.
These new changes make the GEN3 Evo the fastest accelerating car in FIA championships, with some of the world’s biggest manufacturers set to race the car and compete for the 2024-25 title.
