Logan Sargeant struggled in Formula 1 while he was under significant pressure to perform at Williams alongside Alex Albon.
The American driver lacked raw speed and was consistently beaten by Albon while floundering at the back of the field.
Sargeant found it tricky to consistently put together multiple strong race weekends before being dropped earlier this season.
He suffered a big crash at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which damaged the car and a lot of new upgrades Williams had developed.
Sargeant was then replaced ahead of the Italian Grand Prix by Franco Colapinto, who has been very impressive during his brief stint with the team.
Now, Sargeant remains without a drive for next season, but Juan Pablo Montoya told AS Colombia about one key detail suggesting he may be on the verge of securing an IndyCar seat.

Sargeant is searching for new opportunities after leaving Formula 1 halfway through the season and stuttering through race weekends.
The American driver will test an IndyCar for the first time at The Thermal Club on November 19th with Meyer Shank Racing.
MSR had some good moments this season, particularly with Felix Rosenqvist. The Swedish driver had good pace at St. Petersburg, finishing fifth before taking third place in the $1 Million Challenge.
Sargeant could suit IndyCar despite a lack of experience on ovals and racing in Europe for much of his career in the junior categories.
Montoya explained that Sargeant wearing an MSR race suit full of sponsors could be a sign of a potential IndyCar drive next season.
He said: “If you look at the photo I would assume that he is going to run. But if you look, he is in the uniform of the team. He is not doing the test with just any uniform, he is with the uniform full of sponsors.
“And how good for him, the truth is how good for him. He had a very hard time in Formula 1, he didn’t deliver the results, but let’s see, he finished third in F2.
“I think the truth is that the pressure ate him, not the speed. The guy under pressure could never do the job he could have done. He is more worried about doing things too well than doing them.”

Meyer Shank Racing do not have a drive to give Sargeant as they want to build a strong campaign with Marcus Armstrong and Felix Rosenqvist.
There may be other opportunities for the American at Juncos Hollinger Racing, who still have two vacant cars ahead of next season.

Dale Coyne Racing also have two vacancies, while RLL need to find a teammate for Louis Foster and Graham Rahal.
So, the team may have simply given an IndyCar test to Sargeant as Meyer Shank Racing look for some headlines in the off-season.
