Indy NXT was founded in 1977 as the USAC Mini Indy Series before becoming the American Racing Series in 1986 and Indy Lights in 1991 as a CART-sanctioned series. The current iteration of the series was established in 2002 as the IndyCar-sanctioned Pro Series, before regaining the Indy Lights name in 2008 as CART and IndyCar unified, while renamed as Indy NXT in 2023.
