Yamaha founded a factory team in 1999 when running Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa in the 500cc class, who they retained through into the start of the MotoGP era in 2002. Valentino Rossi became the first Yamaha MotoGP riders’ champion in 2004 and has been followed by Jorge Lorenzo and Fabio Quartararo.
